Outdoor Fireplace Installation
Q: “What does the installation of my outdoor fireplace cost?“
You can install your outdoor fireplace yourself, keeping costs to a minimum. Install cost does depend on where you are located in the USA and the difficulty of the install. Contact our friendly team for more information.
Q: “Can I install my own Flare fireplace?“
Many people choose to install their Flare outdoor fireplace. All you need is someone who is practical enough to follow the installation instructions on our installation page.
You can use a hiab, forklift, gantry, digger or tractor to install your outdoor fireplace, as long as the equipment used is able to lift 1,300kg, (the weight of the heaviest component).
Q: “How heavy are Flare’s outdoor fireplaces?“
The firebox is the heaviest component of the fireplace, weighing in at around 1300kg. The chimney is around 700kg and the woodboxes 950kg.
Q: “What kind of prepared surface is needed for an outdoor fireplace?“
This can vary depending on your circumstances and outdoor fireplace model. A concrete pad is fine, we recommend the pad meets our manufacturer’s specs, some models can be installed onto good ground. You can request the manufacturer’s specs for the footing from us.
Q: “What are the dimensions of Flare outdoor fireplaces?“
The Flare Fire is modular with the fire box and wood boxes each being 1360W X 720D. A Standard and Deluxe is 1360 wide. A Premier is 2720 wide, an Executive or Senator is 4080 wide.
Q: “Will I need to get permission from the council for installing an outdoor fireplace?“
It depends where you are located, so it is best to check with your local council. Remember, Flare Fires outdoor fireplaces have been designed to withstand the harsh kiwi environments with winds and earthquakes. If you have any further questions, please contact our team for more information.
Q: “Whom obtains consent if I need it?“
Either yourself or your installer will need to obtain consents.
Q: “Who do I get to install my Flare outdoor fireplace?“
People often DIY install, however installers can also be landscapers, builders, stone-masons and so on.
Q: “Do you deliver and install?”
Flare Fires can be delivered pretty much anywhere in the USA, to any site with a forklift to unload. From here the customer can organise pick up and installation either using an installer or DIY approach. We are available any time on any day to advise on the installation and setup your outdoor fireplace.
If any special equipment is required for your particular site, we can advise and point you in the right direction as there are many installation options apart from truck or Hiab. In some cases by digger or crane is the best way to get your outdoor fireplace in place.
Delivery is typically eight to twelve weeks from confirmation of your order, (dependant on season). Installation is usually a couple of hours including getting your fire in place, assembling and finishing touches.
Q: “Is the outdoor fireplace covered by insurance in transit?“
Yes, your outdoor fireplace is covered by Insurance while in transit.
Q: “Will the weight of the outdoor fireplace and truck damage my driveway?“
This is a possibility. We suggest the company dropping the outdoor fireplace to complete a site inspection prior. Care should be taken.
Q: “Can this outdoor fireplace be put on a wooden deck?“
Some people have done this. Either the deck will need strengthening in the outdoor fireplace location or a concrete base built up to the outdoor fireplace position. Our outdoor fireplaces are fairly heavy, so engaging an engineer would be advised.
Q: “Can outdoor fireplaces be craned over a house into difficult to reach locations?“
Yes this is a very common occurrence. Because of the modular design the maximum weight of any one piece is 1,100kg, so an average crane or large Hiab can lift the modules 20-40 metres into your property. Your next question will be but isn’t that really expensive? Cranes vary in price but installation should take 3 hours (maximum) depending on the outdoor fireplace model. So at the end of the day it is often the most cost effective and simplest way to go.
Q: “Do you have a firebrick installation plan I can look at?”
Q: “How long will my fire take to install?”
Flare outdoor fireplaces (apart from the Martello Steel Tower) are constructed using a modular masonry system for ease of installation. Installation typically takes 2 – 3 hours depending on the outdoor fireplace model.
Q: “When can I expect my order?“
Currently the lead time is approximately 8 – 12 weeks. Give us a call or send us an email and we will give you a quote. Once you are ready to go ahead, you then pay a $500 deposit to get your order into the production queue.
Our lead time is unusually long at the moment, if a shorter delivery time is needed, contact us and we will see what we can do.
Outdoor Fireplace Heat & Performance
Q: “How much heat do Flare outdoor fireplaces create?“
Solid masonry construction provides huge residual heat distribution, holding and distributing the heat and as the fire is built directly on top of the firebricks – this provides a solid, warming fire that burns slowly.
Q: “Will the steel firebox rust?“
There is no steel firebox to rust and stain your deck, no need to put unsightly covers over the firebox to stop it from rusting while not in use.
Q: “Are Flare Fires safe for children?“
Flare outdoor fireplaces have their fireboxes set at a height that is safe for children. The front of the firebox has a stainless steel shield to protect against log roll out, this is also double folded to reduce the risk of burns.
Q: “Should I opt for a wood or gas-fuelled outdoor fireplace?“
Wood has a lot more ambiance and a wider variety of uses. Gas is good if the area is small or enclosed or if fire restrictions are in place.
Q: “Can you cook pizzas on the Flare outdoor fireplace?“
Yes, using a pizza stone on either the swinging cooking frame or the cooking hood over our standard cooking frame.
Outdoor Rooms & Roof Penetration
Q: “Can I install my fire in an outdoor room?“
Flare outdoor fireplaces are often installed into an outdoor room, the solid masonry chimney can penetrate the roof with the appropriate flashing.
Q: “How can the chimney penetrate the roof?“
We have had our outdoor fireplaces laboratory tested to the stringent NZ building code. From this we specify a 50mm air-gap around the chimney, to any combustable material.
This means an air-gap is needed as the chimney penetrates the ceiling of your outdoor roof. Then the non combustable roofing material can be chased into the chimney to keep rain and snow out of the outdoor room. To achieve this, a shallow cut can be made into the chimney which the flashing can be pushed into then sealed with silicone.
Q: “How do I extend the height of my chimney?“
Our masonry outdoor fireplaces are modular, meaning, among other things, that the chimney section is a module, and additional chimney sections can be added to achieve the height needed.
Our standard manufactures specifications for the footings allow for two chimney sections, however additional chimneys can be added. If more then two chimney’s are needed and you are looking for a council approved installation, a custom specification will be needed from our engineers. If council approval is not needed, we can confirm that many Flare Fires are installed with more than two chimney’s.
Q: “What size fireplace is suitable for my outdoor area?“
Because our outdoor fireplaces are modular you can choose a model to suit your space. All the models put out the same heat, so it’s really a matter of the foot print you want the outdoor fireplace to take up in your space.
Outdoor Fireplace Options For Finishes
Q: “How are Flare outdoor fireplaces finished?“
Flare outdoor fireplaces come in a natural concrete look. They are lightly skimmed with a finishing compound to give them a consistent look that people tend to love.
Q: “Can I paint my Flare outdoor fireplace?“
Flare outdoor fireplaces can be painted. This is best done following the application of a plaster. If no plaster is applied, the paint can blister and crack.
Q: “Can I plaster my Flare outdoor fireplace?“
You certainly can, we recommend a mesh placed plaster system which will have better longevity.
Q: “Can I stone or schist my Flare outdoor fireplace?
Covering your Flare Fire is a great way to create a quality finish to suit your surrounds. This is easily done by contacting a stone mason.
